13th DECEMBER CHRISTMAS LUNCH

The CARS Christmas Lunch was held on Wednesday 13th December at the Engine House Café as usual. A god time was had by all:-)

Don't forget that The Engine House is now closed until Monday 8th January 2024 so the CARS Wednesday lunch sessions will recommence on 10th January.

6th DECEMBER "ON-AIR" NIGHT

Our 1st November on air night was cancelled due to the weather. So, we had another go. he weather on 6th December was almost as bad and so the HF station was a non-starter.

However, the QO-100 Amateur Radio Satellite station was easier / quicker to set up in the rain and performed well.

Using the Club Callsign G1XIC/A on voice (SSB)  we had about 20 QSOs as far as India and Brazil. This gave some newer members their first real QSO experience - getting their ears tuned in, getting over "stage fright", making the contacts and logging.

For older members the chance of a satellite QSO was also an interesting experience.

We will certainly be doing this again so come along make use of your callsign and have a go at operating.

4TH OCTOBER
THOUGHTS FROM A TEXAS BBQ

Thoughts from the 30th September 6m DXers BBQ in Austin Texas from Peter G8BCG– including the latest on WSJT modes from Joe Taylor K1JT.

Prior to Covid, the W6JKV / K5AND 6m DXers BBQ was an annual not to be missed event on the 6m DXers calendar. This years event has all the usual suspects (and subjects!).

Here are some images from previous BBQs for now.

6TH SEPTEMBER
AMATEUR RA
DIO IN THE MEDIA

Things have moved on quite a long way since Tony Hancock took a satirical swing at ham radio in 1961. Many hams were annoyed but it certainly brought our hobby into the public eye!

A selection of contemporary videos and other material bringing Amateur Radio into public view.

To be followed by discussion and thoughts about what we can do to encourage more interest locally.

Including a play with the recently donated receiver and scanner - could these be our tools to introduce people to SWLing and ham radio?

2ND AUGUST
OFCOM CONSULTATION
DISCUSSIONS AND SUBMISSIO
N

Wide ranging discussions around and preparation of the Society's response to OFCOM's consultation on amateur radio leading to guideance for the formulation of the CARS response and those of individuals.

OFCOM are proposing many changes to the licensing regime - many are good but some not so good. All will impact on how we enjoy our hobby now and in the future.

GB23C Coronation Special Event Station
Sunday 11th & Sunday 25th June - Duloe

GB23C Sunday 25th June - Duloe

Another great day in Duloe with the Special Event call GB23C.

The forecast storms stayed away and apart from a light shower around mid-day it stayed dry and was (again!) quite warm at times.

We had 3 station setups operational at various times during the day - on HF and 13cm/3cm QO-100 satellite using SSB and FT8. Chris G1VNA also activated on GB23C on D-Star again.

The site was also being used for parking for Duloe Mannor Open Gardens in aid of The Cornwall Wildlife Trust and so we had a really good number of visitors, several of whom showed a real interest in our activities and the Club - fingers crossed.

Many thanks to all who attended - more of the same required - co-sited with public events!

GB23C Coronation Special Event Station Sunday 11th  June - Duloe

Well, that was a fun day, if a little hot at times!

Frustration added to the heat as 40m and indeed the HF bands were not exactly teaming with stations.

We had 5 station setups operational at various times during the day - on 40m, 20m, 17m, 2m and 13cm/3cm QO-100 satellite using SSB and FT8. Chris G1VNA was also active on Fusion where the special callsign attracted quite a bit of attention.

We had a few visitors from including - a couple with two young boys, newcomers to the village, who spent quite a lot of time listening to QSOs and asking questions. The boys went away happy with badges, stickers and a couple of QSL cards. - seeds planted😉.

With a little bit more publicity and news about what we achieved I hope that we will be able to improve on the visitor numbers at our next event on the 25th June.

Many thanks to all who attended - see you at the next one!
